I Am Mediterranean Sea, 10,000 Refugees Have Died In Me

I am Mediterranean Sea

Around 10,000 Refugees have died in me

Men, Women and Children

Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis and Africans

I witnessed the death of nine months old ‘Melek’

3-year-old ‘Alan Kurdi’ and the incomplete love story of ‘Baseem’ and ‘Doaa’

Almost everyday I hear the screaming of Refugees asking for help

But when no one comes, people take their life vests off and sinks into me

Bodies are bloating turning black

I am Crying no one sees

People are dying in me

Rich World is falling apart

2016 was the deadliest year, Number of people who have lost their lives on the Mediterranean was 5,000

“On average, 14 people have died every single day in 2016 in the Mediterranean”

 William Spindler, UNHCR

Even from 1 January- 17 January 2017 around 219 cases are reported by Missing Migrants Project.

Libya is a popular jumping-off point for migrants seeking to reach Europe from North Africa. Smuggling networks are well established there, and the lack of an effective central government makes the job of traffickers easier.

But the crossing can be treacherous, with too many migrants — some fleeing war or persecution, others seeking a better life — crammed into what are often barely seaworthy boats.

IOM spokesman Leonard Doyle calls this a calamity in plain sight.

“In November, we have 365 deaths that we have counted. So, this is six times higher than the deaths last year in that month,” said Doyle. ” Overall, we are counting 1,000 more migrant deaths in the Mediterranean compared to the same period last year. So, over the stretch of the year from January to November , 1000 extra deaths and six times more in November alone.”

Most of the requests for asylum from migrants who come from Gambia, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and elsewhere in West Africa are rejected. They are regarded as economic migrants and are either deported or forced to live underground  in the European Union.

The Situation is clearly alarming.

Most of the people around the globe are worried about their jobs, culture, economies and their future, but
