The great freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad got martyrdom on February 27, 1931. This great Indian revolutionary hero was born on 23 July 1906 at Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh. The story of this great person is as mysterious as the Subhas Chandra Bose was. A secret file related to Azad’s demise is kept at Lucknow’s CID office even today.

This is a story of a person who was mysterious in life as well as in death. Azad’s father was shifted to Uttar Pradesh when he was very small because of starvation issues. There he spent his childhood. 

When Jallianwala Bagh massacre happened, he was studying at Banaras. This had influenced him a lot. Therefore when Gandhiji started non-cooperation movement, Chandra Shekhar along with other students participated in it on the roads.

He got arrested and put in front of the judge, where he told his name as Azad, his father’s name as Swantarta and Jail as his home. On getting arrested for the first time he was punished for 15 flogs. On every flog he got with a hunter he shouted Vande Mataram and Mahatma Gandhi Ki Jai. After that, he was named as Azad publically.

He joined Hindustani Prajatantrik Group in 1924 with Pt. Ramprasad Bismil, Shachindernath Sanyal, Yogesh Chandra Chatterjee. This group had looted and robbed rich people in the villages to gather capital for the sources used for battle against Britishers. They decided that they will not harm any woman under any circumstance. 

Remember the historic Kakori Conspiracy? Chandershekhar along with other revolutionaries decided to loot British treasure trove under Kakori train robbery. This incident had completely shaken the British government.

On 17 December 1928, Chandershekhar Azad with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru murdered British police officer J.P Saunders. It was supposed as a revenge of Lala Lajpat Rai’s murder. Bhagat Singh and Rajguru got arrested after that but Azad made to escape.

He tried his best to turn Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev’s punishment of to be hung till death into life imprisonment. He urged Gandhiji and Nehru for that but they both denied. He augmented a lot with Jawaharlal Nehru on this and after that went to Alfred Park. He was in a meeting with his friend Sukhdev Raj in Alfred Park when he suddenly got trapped by the police.

In a counter firing from both sides, when Azad was left with only one bullet he decided to kill himself rather being caught by the police. He shot himself and by this way, he fulfilled his promise of never being caught by the police and remained AZAD. This heart-wrenching incident was happened on February 27, 1931, and got registered in the history forever.
